Introduction:

According to the Kerala Migration Survey, 2.1 million Malayalees are living in exile in various parts of the world. Ninety percent of them are looking for temporary jobs. All of them want to return to Kerala after completing their term of employment. It is estimated that one third of Kerala's GDP is in foreign exchange. This is thirteen times the amount of foreign exchange earned in India. 

The inflow of foreign exchange into Kerala and its contribution to the Kerala economy is a testament to the extent to which Kerala is dependent on foreign exchange. 

Given this situation, it remains to be seen how the return of expatriates associated with Covid 19 will affect the economy of Kerala.




Why this is important?

As of January 2021, the NORKA Non-Resident Keralites Affairs department indicated that 1,11,151 of the 13,27,330 keralites returned home due to losing their jobs. The numbers are not believed to be true as people who cited their job loss can be factually incorrect and the people may have returned to another jobs and all. 

This doesn't look good for a state which have an economy heavily depending upon the NRI remittances. As of 2019 the NRI deposits count around Rs. 93,000 crore for Kerala, and it was expected to cross Rs. one lakh crores and not happened due to the impact of COVID pandemic.
Also World bank have predicted a 23-25 percent fall in remittances very soon due to global pandemic.

This situation is to be studied in detail so as it has to be dealt with.

ഇവരെല്ലാം തന്നെ ജോലിയുടെ കാലാവധി കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു വരാൻ ആഗഹിക്കുന്നതാണ് .

കേരളത്തിന്റെ ജിഡിപി യുടെ  മൂന്നിലൊന്നും വിദേശനാണ്യം മുഖേനയാണെന്നു കണക്കാക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിലാകമാനം വരുന്ന വിദേശനാണ്യത്തിന്റെ പതിമൂന്നു മടങ്ങു കൂടുതലാണ് ഇത്‌ .

കേരളത്തിലേക്കുള്ള വിദേശനാണ്യത്തിന്റെ വരവും അതിന്റെ കേരള സമ്പദ്‌വ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ ഉള്ള പങ്കും കേരളം വിദേശനാണ്യത്തെ എത്ര കണ്ടു ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നു എന്നതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ് .
